Former Loyola lacrosse star Brennan Dwyer earning national recognition at Northwestern: In advance of Saturday’s televised game against Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, Northwestern sophomore Brennan Dwyer (Class of 2017) was named to Inside Lacrosse’s Midseason All-American third team this week.

A midfielder, Dwyer  is one of the best in the country at draw controls. She ranks sixth with 7.73 per game, helping the No. 6-ranked Wildcats lead the nation in scoring offense. They are No. 1 at 18.9 goals a game.

After beating No. 5 Penn 17-13 at home Sunday for its fourth win in a row, Northwestern (8-3) plays at No. 16 Johns Hopkins (8-2) at 9 a.m. Saturday. The game will be aired live on ESPNU. The Wildcats then play at home Thursday against No. 2 Maryland (10-0).

A Winnetka native, Dwyer (pictured above) has started all 11 games this season. She played in 16 of 21 games as a freshman, ranking second on the team with 36 draw controls.

In high school, Dwyer was a four-time state champion and four-time All-American.

Loyola graduate Reb Banas growing up fast at Villanova: As a freshman on the golf team last season, Reb Banas (Class of 2017) was surrounded in the lineup by seniors. Although he’s only a sophomore, he’s now considered one of the veterans. Three freshmen were among the five players who started Villanova’s last tournament.

“It was a quick adjustment to be one of the players guys look to for help, but I like it,” said Banas, who’s from Winnetka.

At the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational on March 31-April 1, the Wildcats finished 12th in the 20-team field without the team’s top player. Banas placed 68th after rounds of 78-79. He struggled on the greens with seven 3-putts in 36 holes.

Villanova hosts the Wildcat Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

“It’s a ball-striker’s course, and I’m hitting it really well right,” Banas said. “I feel comfortable out there. It’s a big field with a lot of good teams, but we are excited for what we can do.”

The Wildcats have one more event before competing at the Big East Championships at Callawassie Island Golf Club in Okatie, South Carolina, on April 26-28.

“We are getting in the groove and ready to hit the home stretch of the season,” Banas said.
