BASEBALL: Junior Colin Summerhill hit a game-winning, two-out double, scoring junior Mikey Bednarek, in the bottom of the seventh Saturday send the Ramblers to a 5-4 win over Evanston at home. The victory snapped the team’s six-game losing streak.
Tied 4-all heading into Loyola’s half of the seventh, pinch-hitter Bednarek walked to lead off the inning. After Bednarek stole second, the Ramblers made two outs before Summerhill drove him home.
“Huge win,” Loyola senior and captain Patrick Neenan said. “It was good to remind ourselves how good we can be.”
Junior right-hander Thomas Schafer struck out six and allowed two earned runs in four innings. Senior right-hander Colin Gillespie pitched three innings of relief, striking out seven and surrendering two runs, both unearned.
Senior Jake Novak was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Neenan went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
The Ramblers (13-14) end the regular season at home Monday against Palatine. They open the Class 4A state tournament Wednesday at Niles North’s regional. Loyola is the No. 4 seed at its own sectional.
BOYS TENNIS: The Ramblers qualified both of their doubles teams to the Class 2A state tournament Saturday at New Trier’s sectional to extend the program’s run to nine years in a row of advancing at least one singles player or doubles team to the final week of the season.
Seniors and cousins Michael and Ryan Reardon took third place, while seniors John Carpenter and Patrick Lawler finished fourth. It’s the second consecutive season Loyola is sending two doubles teams to the state tournament. Since 2011, the Ramblers have qualified 12 doubles teams.
The state meet, hosted by Hersey, is Thursday through Saturday.
