BASEBALL: Playing against arguably the best team in the state Tuesday, the Ramblers rallied late but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 6-4 loss to St. Laurence at home in the Catholic Blue.
Down 4-1 after two innings, Loyola scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to even the score at 4-all. Junior Ryan Nevins delivered the two-out, game-tying single that scored senior Jared Lombardi.
But the Vikings, ranked No. 1 by Prep Baseball Report, responded by scoring two in the seventh for the final margin.
Junior Mikey Bednarek went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Senior Jack Moran (pictured above) had one hit and one RBI.
Senior Patrick Neenan, a captain, came on in relief in the third and gave Loyola an opportunity to win the game. The right-hander threw four scoreless innings before surrendering two runs in the seventh.
The Ramblers (12-9, 5-5) play at St. Laurence on Thursday. Loyola completes the conference schedule whenever it resumes Monday’s game at Mount Carmel that was suspended after seven innings tied 6-all due to darkness.
Loyola earned the No. 4 seed at its own Class 4A sectional Tuesday. The pairings for the state tournament, which starts May 20, come out Wednesday. The Ramblers wrap up the regular season next week.
