BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Despite a long layoff, the Ramblers beat St. Ignatius 25-22, 25-14 on the road Tuesday to set up a May 7 showdown at home with St. Rita. A victory over the Mustangs assures Loyola (21-5, 4-1) at least a share of the Catholic Blue title for the first time since 2015.
Senior Jack Howard had seven kills and two aces. Senior Henry Clemons finished with six kills, while senior Gavin Elliott contributed three kills. Junior Liam Roberts totaled two kills and two blocks. Junior John Hitt had 19 assists, and sophomore Ryan Merk finished with 10 digs.
BASEBALL: Jimmy Ariel, who coached on the freshman level, died in a car accident Saturday. He was 22 years old. A 2014 graduate of Brother Rice, Ariel taught seventh grade at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview.
“It’s tragic, it’s very tragic,” Loyola head coach Nick Bridich told the Wilmette Beacon. “Even though he was only with our program for a very short time, it was very easy to see the impact he had on players and coaches with his professionalism and energy, his love for teaching, and his love for player development; and he was everything we could’ve asked for and more.”
