BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Junior Jake Soucheray had seven blocks in Loyola’s 25-17, 24-26, 25-15 win over Downers Grove South in the consolation finals Saturday at Downers Grove South’s invitational. A 6-foot-7 right-side hitter, Soucheray added three kills as the Ramblers finished fifth at the tournament after going 4-1.  

Senior Jack Howard totaled four kills and three blocks against the host Mustangs. Senior Henry Clemons contributed nine kills, while senior Gavin Elliott had four kills and two blocks. Junior Liam Roberts (5 kills), junior John Hitt (27 assists, 2 blocks) and sophomore Ryan Merk (12 digs, 4 aces) also factored into the win. 

After opening with two wins, Loyola lost to Hinsdale Central 18-25, 25-19, 25-20 in quarterfinals. Howard had 21 kills, while Roberts totaled three kills and two blocks. Merk finished with four aces. 

The Ramblers rebounded with a 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 win over West Aurora in the consolation semifinals. Howard led the offense with 14 kills. Clemons followed with nine kills. Elliott added four kills and two blocks. 

Loyola (20-5) is off until April 30 when the Ramblers play at St. Ignatius in the Catholic Blue. 

BASEBALL: The Ramblers suffered their second shutout of the season Saturday, a 10-0 loss in five innings to Brother Rice on the road. It ended a six-game stretch in the Catholic Blue where Loyola went 3-3 against three of the best teams in the state. Loyola swept Providence Catholic and split with St. Rita.

Loyola managed as many hits (3) as Brother Rice did home runs (3). Senior Patrick Neenan, junior Ryan Nevins and junior Colin Summerhill each had singles. 

Later in the day, the Ramblers lost their third game in a row, a 6-3 defeat to Antioch at home. They led 2-0 through three innings, but the Sequoits scored three in the fourth and three in the fifth to take control.

Senior Jake Novak went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Summerhill finished 2-for-4.

The Ramblers play Glenbrook South at home Monday before starting a two-game conference series against Marmion on Tuesday. Loyola plays at Mount Carmel on Saturday in the first of a two-game league series.
