BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: On the course that hosts the Class 3A state meet, the Ramblers took 17th in the 63-team field Saturday at the Richard Spring Invitational at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
Senior Billy Delaney led a pack that was separated by less than 45 seconds. He finished 86th in 15 minutes, 55.10 seconds. Senior Alex Owens (92nd, 15:59.40), junior Jack Garrigus (110th, 16:06.70), junior Michael Solmos (161st, 16:30.60) and junior Cameron Matejka (183rd, 16:39.90) all factored into the team score.
St. Charles East, which had two runners inside the top six, placed first.
In the open race, Loyola sophomore Spencer Werner finished fourth in 16:00.40.
On Sept. 14, Delaney took third place in 16:14.7 at DePaul Prep’s invitational at Horner Park in Chicago to lead Loyola to a tie for first place with Elgin Harvest Christian Academy with 49 points. Solmos finished fourth in 16:15.8, and Garrigus came in fifth in 16:23.0.
Loyola is at Palatine’s invitational at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve on Saturday.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Freshman Ellie Grammas ran to 37th place in 18:20.90 at Detweiller Park to help the Ramblers finish 21st out of 66 teams at the Richard Spring Invitational.
Junior Sarah Jay (132nd, 19:35.30), junior Hayes Flanagan (139th, 19:37.60), sophomore Meghan O’Donoghue (164th, 19:50.50) and freshman Maeve Norman (188th, 20:03.70) rounded out the scoring lineup.
With three runners in the top 14, Downers Grove South took the team title.
Loyola sophomore Cate Lynch placed second in the open race in 19:43.40.
At DePaul Prep’s invitational Sept. 14 at Horner Park, Grammas took second in 18:33.8 as the Ramblers tied Payton for first place with 55 points. O’Donoghue placed third in 19:39.4, and Flanagan finished fifth in 19:48.4.
The Ramblers have two events on the schedule Saturday. They are at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Harbor in Chicago as well as Palatine’s invitational.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Ramblers enter this week on a three-game winning streak. Loyola (12-3) plays at De La Salle on Tuesday, hosts Marian Central on Thursday before competing at Rich East’s invitational Friday and Saturday.
In their one game last week, the Ramblers earned a 25-23, 25-16 victory over St. Ignatius at home Tuesday. Prior to that, Loyola (12-3) beat Maine South 25-17, 25-22 and defeated New Trier 25-15, 25-12.
Sophomore outside hitter Mia McGrath finished with 10 kills, six digs and two blocks against the Wolfpack. Junior right-side hitter/setter Sarine Kalayjian added three kills, 10 assists, four digs and one ace. Senior middle Jackie Yau had six kills and one block, while senior setter Chloe Tierney finished with 10 assists, three digs and one ace.
In the Ramblers’ rivalry win over the Trevians, McGrath (6 kills, 9 digs), Yau (2 kills, 4 blocks), Kalayjian (4 kills, 5 assists, 2 digs) and junior outside hitter Josie Fronczak (4 kills, 2 blocks) all contributed.
For the season, McGrath leads Loyola in kills with 135. Tierney is first with 175 assists, while Yau is tops in blocks with 37. Senior defensive specialist Grace Anello headlines with the back row with a team-high 204 digs.
