Seniors Michael and Ryan Reardon are back together again after splitting up for the Catholic League tournament.
Recent history indicates Loyola qualifies more doubles teams than singles players for the Class 2A state series. That’s why head coach Tom Fitzgerald is reuniting the cousins for the Niles West Sectional, which is Friday and Saturday.
The Reardons live within walking distance of one another in Glenview and both attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Best friends since a young age, Ryan said Michael encouraged him to pick up tennis.
“We keep it simple on the court and trust each other,” said Ryan, a captain.
Seniors John Carpenter and Patrick Lawler, the team’s other captain, make up the Ramblers’ second entry at doubles at the sectional.
“Our hope is to get both teams to state,” Fitzgerald said.
Loyola has advanced at least one singles player or one doubles team to the state tournament eight years in a row. Since 2011, the Ramblers have sent 10 doubles teams and six singles players to the final weekend of the season.
Fitzgerald is retiring following his 40th season as a coach in Loyola’s tennis program. The Ramblers won their second consecutive conference championship this year and fifth in the last six seasons.
