Seniors A.J. Cornelison and Aidan Finegan each scored goals, and senior Matthew Choate earned the shutout in net Sunday as the Ramblers beat New Trier Green 2-0 at North Shore Ice Arena in Northbrook to win the Scholastic Hockey League title for the second consecutive season.

Loyola Gold now turns its full attention to the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois state tournament. The defending state champion Ramblers play St. Rita on Tuesday in the quarterfinals at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

“We’ve been taking it one game at a time,” senior Cooper Prawdzik said. “State matters most to us because we want to win it again. But this game was big, too, and beating New Trier helps give us momentum.”

Cornelison gave the Ramblers a 1-0 lead with 6 minutes, 50 seconds left in the first period with his goal on a power play. Finegan made it 2-0 with 17.5 seconds to go in the second, and Choate did his part to secure the win.

“He stepped up huge,” Prawdzik said of Choate, who’s taken on a bigger role recently with senior Andrew Shearson sidelined. “He played outstanding and gave us an advantage.”

Seniors Danny Huber and Timmy Starr were two others instrumental in the win, according to Prawdzik. The Ramblers are 2-3 against the Trevians this season, and four of the five games have been decided by two goals or less.

“Every time we play New Trier it’s a close, hard-fought game,” Prawdzik said. “We knew we had to give it our all. Even when we got the lead, we didn’t want to let up. We wanted to keep attacking.”
