GIRLS SOCCER: Junior Maggie Brett scored two goals and senior Maggie Avery recorded her 13th shutout of the season Tuesday as the Ramblers earned a 3-0 win over Glenbrook South in the Class 3A sectional semifinals at Glenbrook South.

“We came out strong and executed every part of our game plan,” Loyola coach Scott Ackman said. “The girls played one of the best overall games of the year.”

Second-seeded Loyola (20-1-3) plays top-seeded and last year’s Class 4A runner-up New Trier on Friday in the sectional final. The Ramblers last won a sectional title in 2013.

Brett got the Ramblers on the board early off an assist from Avery. Junior Emily Crisman made it 2-0 in the first half on a penalty kick. Brett added her second goal after intermission off a direct kick by senior Cate Shellenback.

The defense of senior Riley Burns and juniors Lauren Daffada, Kiersten Kerrane, Megan Kurtz and Chrisman helped hold the Titans to four shots on goal.

Ackman said the midfielders — senior Anna Holton, junior Sophie Doerr, junior Sammie Holton, sophomore Vanessa Murray, Shellenback — were instrumental in the win, too.

“They controlled the play and were fantastic,” he said.

Along with Brett, senior Stephanie Ramsay and sophomores Alex Guzzardo and Ellie Zern put pressure on Glenbrook South’s defense, totaling nine shots and four on goal.

“This win was truly a team effort, and I’m very proud of the girls,” Ackman said.

The win was Loyola’s 10th in a row. The Ramblers aren on a 15-game unbeaten streak.
