Another season, another new doubles partner for Elizabeth Witkowski.
After playing at the last two Class AA state tournaments with different teammates, she is partnering with junior Katherine Beard for her senior season. The pair lost the season opener Friday to Lake Forest’s Emily Asmussen and Selma Alsilkafi in Loyola’s 9-2 loss to the Scouts.
Beard made the move to doubles after playing singles last year.
“She is one of the most athletic girls on the team and has tremendous hands at the net,” Loyola head coach Tom Gordon said. “She should be a fixture at No. 1 doubles.”
According to Gordon, doubles will be the strength of the Ramblers. Seniors Catherine Power and Maeve Silk return to the varsity lineup as Loyola’s No. 2 doubles team. They came within one win of advancing to the state tournament last year.
The singles lineup is less certain this early in the season. Senior Caitlin Ciolek, senior Talia Vasilj, junior Avery Kaye, junior Emilia Rosinski and sophomore Sarah Clingan all are in the mix for top spots, Gordon said.
“Our storyline will who takes hold of the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions,” he said. “Right now, they are up for grabs.”
