Loyola led more than 31 minutes Sunday, but the Ramblers couldn’t close it out in a 56-55 loss to Marist at home in a matchup of two highly regarded Class 4A clubs. It was Loyola’s first defeat of the season.
After the RedHawks (6-1) went ahead for the first time in the last minute of the fourth quarter, sophomore Sydney Affolter made two free throws in the final seconds for the win.
“This one stings,” Loyola senior Julia Martinez said. “It hurts that we let it get away from us.”
Sophomore Summer Parker-Hall enjoyed another standout performance, totaling a team-best 16 points to go with eight rebounds for the Ramblers (8-1). Junior Addison Ebeling hit three 3-pointers to finish with 10 points. Senior Celia Satter and Martinez both had eight points.
Loyola has two big GCAC Red games this week, both of which are on the road. The Ramblers play Class 4A sectional champion Mother McAuley on Tuesday and Providence Catholic on Thursday.
“We’re going to go back and work our butts off,” Martinez said. “We know the mistakes we made, and we know we can correct them. [Loyola assistant] coach [Jon] Wolfe always tells us that no one is going to remember these games once the playoffs start. This is all preparation.”
