CROSS COUNTRY: The Loyola boys took third place and the girls finished fourth Saturday at their respective Class 3A regional meets at Munz Campus in Glenview to qualify for next week’s sectionals at Niles West.
Paced by sophomore Spencer Dzyacky’s 10th-place finish in 16 minutes, 3.9 seconds, all seven of the boys were 25th or better and separated by less than 43 seconds. The Ramblers totaled 73 points, trailing regional champion New Trier (38) and runner-up Maine South (62). The top five teams advanced to the sectionals.
Freshman Spencer Werner took 13th (16:07.3), senior Eli Miller finished 14th (16:09.2), senior Jack Lynch came in 14th (16:19.0) and junior Alex Owens ended up 20th (16:24.09) to count toward Loyola’s point total. Senior Zach Swanson (21st, 16:25.3) and senior Ian Gallo (25th, 16:46.1) rounded out the lineup.
Like the boys, the Loyola girls relied on a tight pack to advance to the sectionals.
Sophomore Claudia Herman led the way by taking 19th in 20:06.1. She was followed closely by senior Hannah Kelly (20th, 20:07.0), sophomore Hayes Flanagan (21st, 20:08.7) and freshman Meghan O’Donoghue (22nd, 20:09.0). Senior Raegan Robertson (29th, 20:47.5) also contributed to the team’s total of 111.
New Trier (26), Evanston (73) and Maine South (91) finished ahead of the Ramblers. The top five teams advanced to the sectionals.
Senior Ellie Slattery (34th, 20:55.9) and sophomore Eva Holton (38th, 21:15.4) were Loyola’s other runners Saturday.
BOYS SOCCER: The Ramblers’ season ended Friday with a 5-4 loss to St. Patrick in the Class 3A regional final at Munz Campus in Glenview.
But the result doesn’t tell the whole story.
Down 4-0 in the second half, Loyola, the No. 5 seed at Evanston’s sectional, tied the game by scoring four goals in a span of eight minutes, including the equalizer by senior Collin Leider in the 73rd minute.
The No. 4-seeded Shamrocks ended the Ramblers’ comeback effort by scoring the game-winning goal in the 76th minute. It was Loyola’s first loss since a 3-2 defeat to Waukegan on Aug. 30.
Senior Daniel Montaquila and sophomore Michael Sullivan each had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Oscar Blazer scored one goal, while junior Henry Goetz and sophomore Mario Hrvojevic both had assists.
The Catholic Blue champion Ramblers finished the season 15-2-4 and played in their fourth regional final in a row in Baer Fisher’s four seasons as head coach. They are 56-21-7 since he took over in 2015.
