GIRLS TENNIS: In the last match of the tournament and the conference championship on the line Monday, the Ramblers’ No. 1 doubles team of seniors Catherine Power and Lizzie Witkowski earned a 6-4, 1-6 (10-7) win over St. Ignatius to lift Loyola to the GCAC Red title by one point over the Wolfpack.
Although Power and Witkowski had lost to junior Ivvy Hicks and freshman Helena Cilella in two previous matches this season, they won when it mattered most. The Ramblers led throughout the tiebreaker set.
“The moment is never too big for them,” Loyola head coach Tom Gordon said. “They really stepped up for us. It was amazing to watch. Such a huge win.”
Loyola totaled 21 points to edge out defending champion St. Ignatius (20). Fenwick (16) took third, while Providence Catholic (11) finished fourth and Mother McAuley (7) placed fifth.
The Ramblers hope to carry the momentum into this week’s Class AA Niles West Sectional, which is Friday and Saturday.
The Power/Witkowski doubles team was one of three first-place finishes for the Ramblers at the conference tournament. Senior Maeve Silk and sophomore Sarah Clingan won No. 2 doubles, and senior Caitlin Ciolek won No. 2 singles.
“Caitlin did her job, and Maeve and Sarah took care of business,” Gordon said.
Junior Katherine Beard took third at No. 1 singles, and the No. 3 doubles team of senior Talia Vasilj and junior Roberta Spagnolo finished third.
“Great day,” Gordon said. “We needed every one of the points we got to win. It was a team effort.”
Gordon is making some changes to the lineup for the sectional tournament. While Power and Witkowski will play doubles and Beard will compete at singles, the other doubles team will be Ciolek and Silk and Vasilj will play singles.
GIRLS LACROSSE: Five Ramblers were recognized by US Lacrosse for the 2018 high school season. Riley Dolan, Annabelle Burke and Sophia Rucker all were named All-Americans. Mary Kate Campbell and Annie Enrietto each were selected to the All-Academic team. Dolan and Campbell both graduated in 2018. Enrietto, a goalie, is a senior, while midfielders Burke and Rucker are juniors.
