Senior diver Alex O’Toole and sophomore freestyler Luke Maurer are Loyola’s best chances to score points at this weekend’s state meet at Evanston, based on their performances at the Niles North Sectional.
Maurer had the seventh-fastest sectional time in the 200-yard freestyle at 1 minute, 40.85 seconds, and he’s seeded 13th in the 100 free (46.67). O’Toole’s 491.75 points was eighth-most in the state. A three-time state qualifier, he’s looking for his first trip to the finals.
The top 12 in each event in Friday’s preliminaries advance to Saturday, with the top six swimming in the championship finals.
Senior Tommy Barr, who starred at the sectional in Skokie, has an outside shot in his two individual events. He’s 16th in the 50 (21.39) and 20th in the 100 free (47.00).
Junior Ben Dukes and sophomore Everet Andrew are Loyola’s two other individual qualifiers, and both are competing in the 500 free.
The Ramblers also advanced the 200 free relay (Barr, Maurer, Andrew and senior Tony Spallone) and the 400 free relay (Barr, Maurer, Andrew, Dukes).
None of Loyola’s six qualifiers have scored at the state meet.
