Five players with Loyola connections are in the field this week at the 101st Western Junior at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie.
Reb Banas, a 2017 graduate and sophomore golfer at Villanova, led the way in Tuesday’s first round by shooting a 4-over 74. Loyola senior Ryan Savarie followed with 75, while brother Chip Savarie, an incoming freshman golfer at Wisconsin, shot 76. Peter Radler, a Loyola senior, posted 77, and Michigan sophomore golfer and 2017 graduate Connor Prassas carded a 78.
Karl Vilips, of Perth, Australia, and Luke Armbrust, of Wheaton, Illinois, share the lead after shooting 66s. Vilips is the No. 1 player in the American Junior Golf Associaton’s Rolex Rankings. The Illinois-bound Armbrust played golf at St. Francis.
After Wednesday’s 18 holes, the field will be cut to the low 44 and ties. The final 36 holes are Thursday.
