When he enrolled in Loyola last year as a freshman, Spencer Dzyacky was somewhat of a mystery.
That’s all changed.
Dzyacky’s one of five of seven returning runners from last year’s postseason lineup. He was second on the team at the Class 3A Lake Park Sectional behind 2018 graduate Connor Hoag.
“We never heard of him,” Loyola head coach Dan Seeberg said. “Then, he had a strong cross country season was even stronger during the track season. He came on all of sudden.”
A three-year contributor, senior Jack Lynch is the team leader, according to Seeberg. But Lynch has been sidelined with an injury and won’t be in the lineup when the season starts.
“It’s better this is happening now than later,” Seeberg said. “We think he will be able to recover and be able to have a fine season. Even though he’s out, he’s been a good leader.”
Senior Eli Miller, junior Billy Delaney and junior Alex Owens ran in the state series with Dzyacky and Lynch last year. Dzyacky, Miller and Owens finished 1-2-3 in Tuesday’s season opener at Niles West.
Seeberg said seniors Ethan Gallo and Zach Swanson and sophomores Jack Garrigus and Michael Solmos will factor into the rotation.
