Losing in the third round Friday morning at the Class AA state tournament didn’t discourage the doubles team of senior Maggie Hines and junior Lizzie Witkowski.
Despite the 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Stevenson’s Katherine Harvey and Elizabeth Ferdman, a 3-4 seed, they knew there still was something to play for, according to Loyola head coach Tom Gordon.
After winning two matches in the consolation bracket, Hines/Witkowski, a 9-16 seed, are two victories away from earning a state medal. The top six teams receive hardware.
“We would have had to play awesome to keep it close against that Stevenson team and perfect to win it,” Gordon said. “They were so solid, and they made us pay for every mistake.”
In the fourth round of the back draw, Hines/Witkowski beat Hinsdale Central’s Amanda Cashman and Alexis Hamdan 6-2, 6-0. They followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lyons’ Katie Maverick and Nastazja Cancellaro in the fifth round.
“They rebounded well,” Gordon said. “They came out firing after the loss. They were very focused. They are ready for [Saturday].”
