The sixth annual Shoot for Steiner fundraiser to benefit former Loyola student-athlete Patrick Stein is from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help’s Playdium in Glenview.

Stein, a swimmer and water polo captain, suffered a stroke in October 2010 — the fall of his senior year at Loyola —  that triggered Locked-In Syndrome. His mind is sharp, but he’s completely paralyzed, save for some eye movements and blinking. He requires 24-hour care.

There is no cost to attend the event or shoot free throws. Donations are accepted, and the money goes to pay Stein’s medical needs.

“This fundraiser has been very helpful,” said Nick Stein, Patrick’s father. “The money has allowed us to do some different things for him, some cutting edge therapies and treatments. More money allows us more access.”

One of the Stein’s big hopes is to reach out to Apple in an effort to encourage the company to develop technology and software to assist Patrick in his daily routine.
