Loyola 35, Fenwick 6
GAME RECAP: Linebackers Liam Conahan and Jake Holecek and safety Frank Schurer headlined a defense that suffocated the Friars on a steamy Saturday in Wilmette.
Rotating a cast of players on defense, the Ramblers (4-1) held Fenwick to two first downs on their way to a 21-6 lead at the half. Schurer finished the game with two pass break-ups and one interception.
“The defense was dominant all afternoon,” Loyola head coach Tony Minestra said.
Running back Trevor Cabanban scored twice, including a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that put Loyola ahead 28-6. Quarterback Aidan Clark threw two TDs, both to receiver Matty Mangan. JP Gourley completed the scoring with a 10-yard TD run.
Thomas Schafer made all five extra points and picked up a first down on a fake punt by running for 15 yards.
COACH’S COMMENT: “Really proud of our players battling through the heat. We were well-conditioned, and the young men were prepared for the elements. The strength of our program is our quality depth, from the top of our roster all the through. That showed Saturday.” — Tony Minestra
