Loyola 36, Hinsdale Central 29
GAME RECAP: The Ramblers rallied to win a wild one on the road in Week 1.
Down 29-28 with 1 minute, 21 seconds left in Hinsdale, quarterback John Gavric found Andrew Smart for 60-yard touchdown pass to lift Loyola past Hinsdale Central. Gavric hit Matty Mangan for the two-point conversion for the final margin.
“Trevor was electric all night,” Loyola head coach Tony Minestra said. “Matty had a couple of clutch catches and was a force blocking on the edge to help spring Cabanban on multiple big gainers.”
On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Thomas Schafer made the tackle, and the Ramblers held Hinsdale Central in check to secure the win. Schafer also was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points.
Hinsdale Central returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and led 20-14 at the half. The Ramblers went ahead after a 12-play scoring drive to start the third quarter. On the kickoff, Jake Holecek recovered a fumble to set up one of four touchdown runs by Trevor Cabanban that gave the Ramblers a 28-20 advantage.
The Red Devils weren’t done. They scored a touchdown and kicked a field goal to retake the lead 29-28.
On the defensive side, Minestra said linebackers Spencer Hensley, Anthony Kozlowski and Liam Conahan all had good games, along with cornerback Artist Benjamin.
