Loyola senior Margaret Hickey closed out her round Wednesday with two birdies to finish first at the regional tournament at Winnetka Golf Club.

Hickey, a Creighton recruit, shook off a triple bogey on the back nine to shoot 78 and capture her first regional championship. Prospect senior Kate Ponzi took second with an 80.

“I left a lot of shots out there,” Hickey said. “But compared to the field, it all worked out. The strong finish was nice.”

The Ramblers finished second as a team after posting 336 to advance to the sectional tournament Monday at Buffalo Grove Golf Club. The top three teams at the sectional qualify for the Class AA state tournament. Loyola has placed second in each of the last three seasons at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

“Winning a regional title definitely has been a goal of mine, but it wasn’t something I thought about [Wednesday],” Hickey said. “My main concern was to get the team to advance.”

New Trier, which shot 332, snapped Loyola’s run of regional titles at three in a row.

Senior Kellie McCabe and junior Nina Rutkowski both shot 85s to tie for eighth. Hickey, McCabe and Rutkowski all were in the lineup last year at the state tournament. Sophomore Lilly Gentzkow rounded out the team scoring with an 88.

“There were a lot of tough teams at this tournament,” Hickey said. “But we knew if we played decent, it would work out for us.”
